Picking up on the scent It is not necessarily the scent of the citronella spray that deters dogs from barking, but the sensation of the spray itself. Some dogs hate the citronella scent, while some others don't mind it. But it is a scent that dogs do not generally encounter often in their normal day-to-day lives, so the scent combined with the sensation of the spray is usually enough to create a deep association in the dog's mind, related directly to nuisance barking. | No HFC-R134a = safe to spray Other spray collars include refills that use HFC-R134a refrigerant as a propellant. HFC-R134a is an industrial coolant used in refrigerators and car and home air conditioners. It is currently being phased out or banned in numerous countries, including most of Europe, North America and Australia, due to its potential impact on our environment. Does that sound like something you would spray on yourself, let alone your pet? Barkmate refills use the same common propellants used in deodorants, hair sprays etc., so you can be assured they are safe for you, your pet and the environment. |

The bigger it gets, the harder it falls (in price) Citronella refills are expensive. There's no sugar-coating it. But the reason they're so expensive comes down to packaging. Those small aluminum cans actually cost more to produce and print than the larger tinplate cans and, even worse, they can only hold a small amount of citronella spray formula. That's why we've made these jumbo refills, which hold more than four times the quantity of the smaller can included in the starter kit. And because we're only producing one can for every four that our competitors produce, both the price and the environmental impact drop sharply. |
| Smart power for longer battery life All of our spray collars feature smart power settings, which put all of the internal electronics, except the microphone, into hibernation mode when not required. This leaves the microphone sensor to run on minimal power and listen out for dog barking. Once activated, they draw only as much power as they need, which means you can get up to, and sometimes over, a month of use from a single battery cycle (when used 8-12 hours per day and turned off between uses). |
