The Barkmate Deluxe Spray Collar is an automatic citronella spray training collar that works on four of your dog's five senses; they see, hear, smell and feel the spray with each correction.

When your dog barks, the collar picks up on the unique sounds coming from the dog's throat and activates a warning beep. If your dog continues to bark, the collar will then issue a quick, sharp spray towards the dog's lower muzzle, making it either distracting or uncomfortable for them to continue barking at what originally had their attention.

It is not necessarily the scent of the citronella spray that deters dogs from barking, but the sensation of the spray itself. Some dogs hate the citronella scent, while some others don't mind it. But it is a scent that dogs do not generally encounter often in their normal day-to-day lives, so the scent combined with the sensation of the spray is usually enough to create a deep association in the dog's mind, related directly to nuisance barking.

Three new models that leave the others in the dust
The new range of Barkmate collars have been built from the ground up. We haven't just taken the same clumsy brick-on-a-strap design, copied it and put our own name on it. What you see here represents two and a half years of research, design, prototyping, testing and refinement. These products are designed for dog lovers, taking into account what we, ourselves, have experienced as users of other products, and what customers have told us they would change or like to add to the same stale products that are still on the market after 20 years of no progress.

What the *beeeeep*?
When your dog barks, they are warned with an audible tone. If they bark again at any time within the next 60 seconds, the spray correction cycle will begin. Within that correction cycle, the dog always has a minute from the time they last barked to stop and avoid further corrections.
What The *Beeeeeep*?   Rewarding with a reset
If your dog has received one or more spray corrections, and then ceases their barking for at least 60 seconds, the collar will reset itself to an initial warning beep. This gives the dog both a break from constant spray corrections and also allows the warning beep training to sink in.

No HFC-R134a Propellant = Safe To Spray   No HFC-R134a = safe to spray
Other spray collars include refills that use HFC-R134a refrigerant as a propellant. HFC-R134a is an industrial coolant used in refrigerators and car and home air conditioners. It is currently being phased out or banned in numerous countries, including most of Europe, North America and Australia, due to its potential impact on our environment. Does that sound like something you would spray on yourself, let alone your pet? Barkmate refills use the same common propellants used in deodorants, hair sprays etc., so you can be assured they are safe for you, your pet and the environment.

A true training device, not just punishment-on-a-strap
All of Barkmate's products are based on the reflex conditioning principles made famous by Ivan Pavlov.

In his studies, Pavlov would take a hungry dog, give it food and ring a bell at the same time. After a while, the dog learned to associate the ringing of the bell with meal times. Therefore, when Pavlov rang a bell, even with no food in sight, the dogs would still become hungry and ready for meal time.

Using the same principles, Barkmate's products aim to embed a mental association within the dog that the warning beep signifies the beginning of a correction cycle related directly to their barking.

This is where other bark collars fail. A standard sonic/ultrasonic collar is all warning and no correction, whereas standard citronella collars are all correction and no warning. A warning/correction combination is vital, because you want to train your dog to reduce their barking. To do this, they need the audible identifier that lets them know that they are entering into a period where there are consequences for further action.

A view from the bottom
On the left, we have the refill valve. This is where you insert the refill can, apply pressure and allow the collar to fill up with the citronella spray. On the right, we have the battery cover. This screws on and off and, more importantly, makes a waterproof seal between the outside world and the internal electronics.
  A view from the back
On the sides are the guides/arms to hold the nylon collar strap in place and secure the training device to your dog. To the bottom left of our logo plate is the on/off button. You'll hear two beeps when you turn the collar on and one long beep when you turn it off. Make sure to turn it off between uses and save time, money and power.
  A view from the top
At the top, we've got the LED indicator. This will light up when you turn the device on and off, when a correction occurs and will also blink regularly when battery life is running low. Below that, we've got the spray valve. This is where the short, sharp sprays come out. To the left is the microphone sensor that picks up on the barking.

The bigger it gets, the harder it falls (in price)   The bigger it gets, the harder it falls (in price)
Citronella refills are expensive. There's no sugar-coating it. But the reason they're so expensive comes down to packaging. Those small aluminum cans actually cost more to produce and print than the larger tinplate cans and, even worse, they can only hold a small amount of citronella spray formula. That's why we've made these jumbo refills, which hold more than four times the quantity of the smaller can included in the starter kit. And because we're only producing one can for every four that our competitors produce, both the price and the environmental impact drop sharply.

Smart power for longer battery life
All of our spray collars feature smart power settings, which put all of the internal electronics, except the microphone, into hibernation mode when not required. This leaves the microphone sensor to run on minimal power and listen out for dog barking. Once activated, they draw only as much power as they need, which means you can get up to, and sometimes over, a month of use from a single battery cycle (when used 8-12 hours per day and turned off between uses).
